The 2024 Lexus GX: The Outcome of a Land Cruiser’s Luxurious Transformation

If travelling anywhere in the world is your goal, you would likely opt for a Toyota Land Cruiser. However, if luxury and comfort during that travel are your priorities, you would most certainly choose a Lexus LX. It’s an old tale for these automotive siblings. Unfortunately, North America has yet to receive the powerful Land Cruiser LC300, although rumors are swirling about a potential smaller Land Cruiser 250 release post-2024. But there’s no need to worry – the luxurious full-size 2024 Lexus LX600 is available and arguably the better option if you have the means. If not, there’s good news – the more compact yet equally refined 2024 Lexus GX is here as an alternative to the LX.

The Long-Awaited Third-Generation Lexus GX

The second-generation Lexus GX has been a steadfast presence in the industry, undergoing several facelifts since its introduction in 2010. Now, with the supremely refined GA-F body-on-frame platform, previously introduced in the larger Lexus LX600, and a new twin-turbo V6 (plus a hybrid option on the horizon), the all-new Lexus GX is everything you would expect from a Land Cruiser perfected by Lexus. It even prompted Lexus to redefine their new 7-seat SUV as a ‘Sophisticated Utility Vehicle’.

The 2024 Lexus GX: A Squarer Take on the Land Cruiser

If you ever pondered how to make a box look enticing, just ask Lexus. The new Lexus GX 550 utilizes the recently introduced, lighter, and more rigid GA-F platform, which made its debut only a few years back on the 2023 Lexus LX600. Its styling is rugged, sharp, and traditional, featuring a notably upright windscreen. Nonetheless, it looks fresh and among a sea of curvy, futuristic SUVs, the 2024 GX will definitely stand out.

This is particularly true if you’re considering the off-road specific Lexus GX 550 Overtrail model. For the first time, Lexus introduced a model with different overall dimensions to the GX lineup, standing about an inch taller and wider than the standard GX 550. This model pioneers the Lexus Overtrail Project, indicating a potential lineup of more robust, off-road oriented Lexus SUVs. Elements like the electrically powered rear lift door (which now folds down instead of sideways) and pop-out window come standard.

The Modern Interior of GX 2024 Shows Why Lexus Is Worth The Investment

When you invest in a Lexus, you expect the interiors to justify the additional cost over its Toyota counterpart. The new Lexus GX will not disappoint. Thoroughly modern, designers have even lowered the sightline of the dashboard and instrumentation over onto the doors to improve visibility. This creates a feeling of airiness and enhances comfort with revised front seats that significantly relax the seating position.

Centrally placed on the minimalist dashboard is a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by a 12.3-inch driver’s display and optional heads-up display. As expected, Mark Levinson audio with up to 21-speakers is available. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard features. Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 is also included, which bundles active safety equipment like lane steering assist, active cruise control and more.

Lexus GX Drops V8 for More Efficient Twin-Turbo V6 and Hybrid

Regrettably, Lexus has discontinued the 4.6-liter V8 engine for the 2024 GX. In its place, a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 416 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque powers the GX 550. Not to fret, though, as it still performs admirably off-road, thanks to the new platform and enhancements like an electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. The GX 550 Overtrail goes a step further with skid plates, rock rails, and unique off-road driving modes. Furthermore, a 3.5-liter V6 hybrid model, boasting an impressive 33 MPG in the city, will follow later in 2024.

Is the 2024 Lexus GX the Luxurious Land Cruiser America Deserves?

If the void left by the absent Land Cruiser LC300 is too much to bear, the 2024 Lexus GX might be the cure. Capable, comfortable, and luxurious, the GX remains the smaller sibling to the full-size LX600, but that doesn’t mean it’s in any way inferior. With a renewed focus on luxury, comfort, and modern tech, the GX is perhaps the perfect blend of Land Cruiser ruggedness and Lexus sophistication.

Indeed, the 2024 Lexus GX seems to be a remarkable car, especially for those who appreciate luxury and off-road adventures equally. It will be interesting to see how it fares in the global markets after its release.
